Stay Safe This Summer
A few simple habits this summer keep you, your family, and our crews safe.
Be safe in the water
Faulty wiring on docks and boats can silently electrify the water around them — a danger known as electric shock drowning. Always have dock electrical systems inspected before swimming season, and never swim near marina power pedestals or boat lifts.
Downed Lines Are Live Lines
Never approach a downed power line — even if it's not sparking. Stay back at least 30 feet, keep others away, and call 911 immediately. Wait for our crew to arrive.
Call Okie Before You Dig
Before any digging — garden beds, fence posts, landscaping — call 811. It's free, fast, and gets underground utility lines marked before you break ground.
Storm Preparedness
Keep an emergency kit stocked with flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered phone charger. Know how to report an outage at okcoop.org or 1-800-522-3520.
If Power Lines Hit Your Car
Stay inside your vehicle and call 911. Your car is your safest place. Only exit if there is immediate danger of fire — and if you must, jump out of the vehicle with both feet together, without touching the car and ground simultaneously.
Slow Down for Our Crews
When you see an OEC crew working on the road, slow down and move over. Oklahoma's Move Over law applies to utility vehicles — and it keeps our linemen safe while they work to restore your power.

OEC Community Program
See electricity in action. Learn what to do — and what never to do.
OEC's Live Line High Voltage Demo brings electrical safety education directly to your school, fire department, or community group. Using a fully functional interactive trailer, our team demonstrates real electrical behavior — including live arcs, voltage concepts, and exactly how to handle dangerous situations like downed power lines and car wrecks involving utility equipment.
It's engaging, memorable, and designed for every age group — from kindergarten classrooms to professional first responder trainings.
