CEO Patrick Grace discusses how OEC prepares for increased summer electricity use through proactive planning, vegetation management and member-focused rate options.
As summer settles across Oklahoma, families spend more time outdoors, make vacation plans and look for ways to stay cool. For Oklahoma Electric Cooperative, summer also marks one of the busiest times of the year as we prepare our electric system to handle increased energy demand.
Historically, July brings some of the highest electricity use of the year as air conditioners work harder to keep homes comfortable. As temperatures climb, so does household energy consumption.
Helping Keep Electric Service Affordable
OEC remains committed to providing safe, reliable and affordable electric service for our members. We carefully manage costs throughout the year to deliver dependable electricity at the lowest practical price.
Weather plays a significant role in summer electric bills. Moderate temperatures can help reduce energy use, while extended periods of extreme heat often lead to higher consumption.
Several years ago, OEC members told us they wanted more flexibility when it came to electric rates. In response, we introduced multiple rate options, giving members the opportunity to choose the rate that best fits their household’s energy use.
Most members who switch rates experience lower electric bills. If you haven’t compared your options recently, visit okcoop.org/ratecalc to use OEC’s Rate Calculator and determine which rate works best for your home.
Preparing for Summer Storms
Summer also brings another challenge: rapid vegetation growth near power and fiber lines.
Trees and brush remain one of the leading causes of power outages, particularly during severe weather. That’s why OEC crews and trusted contractors proactively trim vegetation and maintain clear rights-of-way throughout the year.
Although this work is most visible during the growing season, it provides year-round benefits by strengthening system reliability, reducing outage risk and helping crews restore power more quickly after storms.
Reliability Begins Before the Storm
Many of the reliability improvements our members experience during storm season are the result of work completed long before severe weather appears on the forecast.
Preventive maintenance—including vegetation management, equipment inspections and ongoing system improvements—may not always be visible, but it plays an essential role in keeping power flowing when conditions become challenging.
