Discovering the differences that make us unique

Innovation and Sustainability

Although electric cooperatives were originally created to bring electricity to rural America, they continue to be at the forefront of innovation. Many generation cooperatives are investing in renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower — and have been for a long time. Some are also exploring battery storage solutions and smart grid technologies to enhance reliability and efficiency.

Furthermore, cooperatives actively participate in energy conservation initiatives, helping members reduce their energy consumption through efficiency upgrades and demand response programs. These efforts contribute to sustainability while also keeping costs manageable for members.

OEC is once again at the forefront of innovation by meeting the connectivity needs of our rural members. , In 2017, we launched OEC Fiber to bridge the digital divide that reflected our earliest beginnings — bringing a vital service where no one else would. As a result, over 40,000 central Oklahomans enjoy reliable, affordable broadband in a world that’s increasingly more difficult to live without it.

Economic Development and Community Support

Beyond providing electricity, electric cooperatives play a significant role in supporting local economies. They create jobs, support small businesses, and invest in infrastructure projects that benefit their communities. Many cooperatives also offer scholarships, sponsor community events, and participate in charitable initiatives, reinforcing their commitment to the people they serve. OEC is proud to partner with each of the communities we serve to make a positive impact in each of them.

A Future Built on Cooperation

The electric cooperative model has stood the test of time, proving that a member-owned, not-for-profit approach to electricity distribution can be both successful and sustainable. As the energy landscape evolves, cooperatives remain dedicated to embracing new technologies, improving service, and maintaining their commitment to the communities they serve.

In an era where many utilities are driven by financial incentives, electric cooperatives stand apart by prioritizing people over profits. This cooperative difference ensures that members receive reliable, affordable electricity while benefiting from a system built on fairness, transparency, and local control. For the millions of people served by electric cooperatives, this model isn’t just about keeping the lights on—it’s about empowering communities and shaping a brighter future together.
