Warning: Scammers are exploiting preloaded debit cards, in this instance the GreenDot MoneyPak, which is sold at places like CVS, Walgreens and Walmart, to steal money from unsuspecting consumers. Crooks especially like the MoneyPak system because funds sent through the system are untraceable and the company does not assume responsibility for fraud or theft of funds. Always consider a specific request to use a MoneyPak or prepaid card to be a scam, and never give away a card’s pin or serial number or information on the receipt to a stranger. Likewise, never mail a loaded prepaid card through the mail—it’s equivalent to mailing cash. OEC uses an automated system to call members whose service is in jeopardy because of an unpaid bill, similar to what victims have reported. However, OEC never makes calls on the weekend.
